Associate Professor of Japanese Kyoko Omori presented a paper, “Reinvesting Nuclear Capital: Hiroshima, Cinema, and Global Circulation of Witness,” at the American Comparative Literature Association Conference on March 22 at New York University.

The National Museum of American History has designated April as Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM). So in the spirit of JAM, Hamilton’s Fillius Jazz Archive is featuring one artist daily on the news site along with that individual’s archived audio interview and transcript. Today’s featured artist is Clark Terry H’95.

Joyce M. Barry, visiting assistant professor of women’s studies, participated in the symposium, “Environmental Crisis: History, Economics, and Politics,” at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, on April 4.

Hamilton alumnus and music major Jeff Dyer ’04 returned to Hamilton on April 3 for a discussion and performance with famed flute player, Arn Chorn Pond. Pond is a Cambodian-American who experienced the horrors of genocide when the Khmer Rouge took control of his native country and forced Pond into a child work camp.

Award-winning author and journalist Christopher Dickey will deliver the Commencement address at Hamilton College on Sunday, May 25, at 10:30 a.m., in the Margaret Bundy Scott Field House. Dickey will be awarded an honorary degree, along with Deborah Bial, founder and president of the Posse Foundation, and Thomas Schwarz '66, president of Purchase College. Singer and songwriter Rosanne Cash will offer the Baccalaureate sermon on Saturday, May 24, at 3 p.m., in the Scott Field House. She will receive an honorary degree from Hamilton in December.

Alfred Kelly, the Edgar B. Graves Professor of History, was one of three Americans invited to participate in the First Historical Meeting of the Museum of the War of 1870 and the Annexation International Symposium in Gravelotte, France.

Shelley Haley, professor of classics and Africana studies and director of the Africana Studies Program, spent the week of March 24-28 at Hobart and William Smith Colleges (HWS) as a Melvyn Hill Visiting Scholar-in-Residence.

April 6 marks the 20th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide; yet, in light of the current conflict in Syria, many question the lessons learned from history. Ambassador Prudence Bushnell, who served as deputy assistant secretary of state for African affairs during the time of the Rwandan genocide, gave a Levitt Center-sponsored lecture on April 2, with Emily Willard, project coordinator for the Genocide Prevention Project.

When celebrated Indian street photographer Pranlal K. Patel died in January at the age of 104, he left behind an impressive legacy and 70 years worth of works. An exhibit at the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art has brought new life to some of the artist’s images from the early twentieth century.
