This past weekend, Hamilton College held a series of events to kick off its spring social entrepreneurship programming.  The Levitt Center – in conjunction with the Career Center and the COOP – sponsored various talks and information sessions to get students thinking about social innovation.

Earl E. Devaney, inspector general for the Department of the Interior, will deliver a lecture titled “How to Protect $800,000,000,000 in Public Spending: Oversight of the Stimulus Package,” on Thursday, March 7, at 4:30 p.m., in the Dwight Lounge in the Bristol Center at Hamilton. His lecture is part of the Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center’s Security program and is free and open to the public.

Lolita Buckner Inniss, the Elihu Root Peace Fund Visiting Professor of Women’s Studies, presented a lecture titled “James C. Johnson and the Princeton Fugitive Slave Case” on Feb. 25 at Princeton University.

Artist Trenton Doyle Hancock will present a lecture on Wednesday, March 6, at 4:15 p.m., in the Bradford Auditorium, Kirner-Johnson.  The lecture is part of the art department’s Visiting Artist Series and is free and open to the public.

As February drew to a close, Hamilton welcomed a variety of prestigious authors in celebration of International Writers Week (Feb. 26 – March 2). A book fair, held in the Taylor Science Center on March 2, showcased works suggested by faculty, as well as pieces from the authors who gave presentations. The featured writers were A. S. Byatt, Kamila Shamsie ’94 and Ishion Hutchinson.

Six prizes were awarded across three categories in the annual Public Speaking Competition on Saturday, March 3, in the Chapel. The finalists were chosen after an open preliminary round held in February. Speakers’ presentations were either persuasive or informative in nature, and in one category students were asked to address an assigned topic.

John H. O’Neill, Edmund A. LeFevre Professor of English emeritus, was a contributing editor to The Broadview Anthology of Restoration and Eighteenth-Century Comedy, published by Broadview Press (Peterborough, Ontario).  O’Neill contributed an edition of The Man of Mode: or, Sir Fopling Flutter (1676), by Sir George Etherege.

USA Today quoted a study co-authored by Assistant Dean of Faculty for Institutional Research Gordon Hewitt in an article titled “Crossing party lines: Individual decision or university influence?” on the publication’s college website. The study, titled “Indoctrination U.? Faculty Ideology and Changes in Student Political Orientation” appeared in PS: Political Science & Politics in October 2008.

Wendy Doniger, the Mircea Eliade Distinguished Service Professor of the History of Religions at the University of Chicago’s Divinity School, will present the Hansmann Lecture titled “The Political Framework of Gender in the Kamasutra,” on Monday, March 4, at 4:10 p.m., in the Taylor Science Center’s Kennedy Auditorium.

Karl F. Inderfurth, the Sol M. Linowitz Professor of International Affairs and former assistant secretary of state for South Asian Affairs, will deliver a lecture titled “Is India the Next Superpower?” on Tuesday, March 5, at 7:30 p.m., in the Red Pit. His lecture is sponsored by the Government Department and is free and open to the public.
