Associate Professor of Philosophy Katheryn Doran  gave a paper on Nov. 5 at the Pace Institute for Environmental and Regional Studies Conference on the Environment: The Good Life—Imagining Alternative Futures.  Her paper was titled Cosmopolitanism or Localism?

Hamilton Government faculty will assess last week’s 2010 election in a panel discussion on Tuesday, Nov. 9, from noon to 1 p.m., in the Bradford Auditorium, KJ building. Professors Phil Klinkner, Ted Eismeier, Andy Milstein and Peter Cannavo´ will participate in the panel. The discussion is open to the public.

The General Electric (GE) board of directors has named Hamilton alumnus and trustee John G. Rice ’78 as head of global operations. Rice, a GE vice chairman since 2005, will be in charge of GE’s growth outside the United States. The appointment is effective Jan. 1, 2011, and Rice will relocate to Hong Kong, according to a GE press release.

Maeve Gately ’12, Allison Eck ’12, Courtney Flint ’11 and Olivia Wolfgang-Smith ’11 participated in a joint conference by the International Writing Centers Association and the National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing, Nov. 4-6 in Baltimore, Md. The students, all peer writing tutors at the Nesbitt-Johnston Writing Center, were accompanied by Director of the Writing Center and Lecturer in English Sharon Williams.

Seven students were inducted into Lambda Pi Eta, the national communication honor society, on Oct. 31, at a brunch that included faculty, students and families. The new members are seniors Lauren DiGregoria, Daniel Hagemeier, Greg Kreitzer, Kate Northway and Elsie Swank, and juniors Ephraim McDowell and Perry Ryan. They join current member and chapter president Sarah Goodell '11. In addition, Northway was elected vice president and Swank was chosen as secretary.

Rick Werner, the John Stewart Kennedy Professor of Philosophy, spoke at Author Meets Critics: a panel discussion of the newly released 2nd ed. of Duane Cady’s From Warism to Pacifism at "The Obama Years: War, Peace, and Environmental Stability," at McGill University, Montreal, on Oct. 29-30.

Hamilton is proud to recognize its 24 student volunteer members of Hamilton College Emergency Medical Services (HCEMS) as the week of Nov. 7 marks National Collegiate Emergency Medical Services Week.

The Hamilton College Department of Music presents a free faculty recital by Heather Buchman, trombone, on Sunday, Nov. 7, at 3 p.m., in Wellin Hall. Buchman will be accompanied by Sar-Shalom Strong, piano, and Ilze Brink-Button, horn, in the program of solo works and transcriptions for trombone by Bach, Scarlatti, Mahler and others.

Dr. Gordon B. Smith, the director of the Walker Institute of International and Area Studies, and Dr. Mark D. Welton, professor of international and comparative law at the United States Military Academy, gave lectures on the roots and effects of corruption in Russia and traditional Islamic law as part of the Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center’s Security Series. They then joined a panel discussion and answered questions from the audience with Government Professors Charlotte Lee and Nathaniel Richmond.

Nine Hamilton students participated in the National Model United Nations Conference (NMUN) Oct. 29-31 in Washington, D.C. The conference drew more than 50 schools from the U.S., Canada and Europe and approximately 1,000 delegates.
