“Country and Bluegrass” is the theme of the fourth session in the America’s Music film history screenings and musical performances, sponsored by the Kirkland Town Library (KTL) and Hamilton’s Burke Library.

David Baker, professor of English at Denison University, will read from his work on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at 8 p.m., in the Fillius Events Barn.  Baker holds the Thomas B. Fordham Chair of Creative Writing at Denison.  His lecture is as part of the English and Creative Writing Department’s Reading Series and is free and open to the public.

Assistant Professor of Economics Emily Conover, together with colleagues from Amherst, Colgate, Wesleyan and Vassar, co-organized the inaugural Liberal Arts Colleges Development Economic Conference (LAC-DEV).

A group of students traveled to Hancock Shaker Village in Hancock, Mass., and to Mount Lebanon, N.Y., on Sept. 29 as members of the Religious Communal Societies in America, 1620-1950, course.

Dean Spade visited Hamilton on Oct. 10 to lecture on the effectiveness of legal reform to promote social equality. Spade, associate professor at the Seattle University School of Law, focused his discussion on struggles and obstacles faced by the American trans community.

“What can higher education learn from libraries?” Members of the Hamilton College community and librarians from the surrounding area gathered in the Kennedy Auditorium on Oct. 10 to find out. Professor R. David Lankes delivered Hamilton’s Couper Phi Beta Kappa Library Lecture, “What Can Higher Education Learn from Libraries?” exploring how library practices can actually inform some of the current debates surrounding higher education.

On Sept. 21, 35 Hamilton LGBTQ & Ally students took a trip to New York City with the goals of discussing LGBTQA history, examining current LGBTQA issues, receiving career-planning perspectives, and connecting with alumni. This program was organized by Hamilton’s Days-Massolo Center, and the Office of Alumni Relations.

Heidi Ravven, professor of religious studies, gave an invited lecture, “The Self Beyond Itself Rethinking How Individuals Can Become Morally More Courageous and Societies More Humane,” on Sept. 23 at Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass.

The Hamilton College F.I.L.M. (Forum for Images and Languages in Motion) series will present The Act of Killing (2012) from director Josh Oppenheimer on Sunday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m., in the Bradford Auditorium, KJ. The event includes the screening of the film as well as a discussion with Hamilton professors Craig Latrell, Lawrence Chua and Scott MacDonald. It is free, open to the public and co-sponsored by the Hamilton College Asia Forum.

The work of Katharine Kuharic, the Kevin W. Kennedy Professor of Art, is on display through Oct. 13 in “Texas Contemporary” at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston.
