President David Wippman will preside over the annual Convocation ceremony that officially opens Hamilton’s 205th year on Wednesday, Aug. 24, at 4:30 p.m., in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center.  An all-campus picnic will follow. The Convocation ceremony can be viewed live here.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Biology Simon Coppard was a co-author of a paper titled “Formation of the Isthmus of Panama” published in the journal Science Advances on Aug. 17. The article focused on when the Isthmus of Panama actually formed, joining North and South America.

Walter Mondale, the 42nd vice president of the United States, will offer brief remarks.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Philosophy Douglas Edwards recently presented talks at conferences in South Korea and the United Kingdom. In addition, a draft of his forthcoming monograph is being used in discussion groups at several universities.

With the Syrian refugee crisis ever-present in the news and issues of immigration taking center stage in the current presidential election, questions surrounding religious diversity and inclusivity have rarely been as important in global politics as they are today. It is against this historic backdrop that Shannon Boley ’17 was able to take her past research on religious pluralism from Upstate New York all the way to Rome, Italy, as one of this summer’s 18 Emerson Grant recipients.

Professor of Physics Emeritus Phil Pearle recently presented “Quantized Vector Potential and the Magnetic Aharonov-Bohm Effect” during the Concepts and Paradoxes in a Quantum Universe conference held at Perimeter Institute in Waterloo, Ontario.

In 2016, the American Cancer Association expects 62,450 new cases of thyroid cancer with approximately 2,000 deaths. Although anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) is fairly rare, representing approximately 5% of thyroid cancer, it is also one of the deadliest forms of cancer, with most patients dying within 6 months of diagnosis. Martina Brave’17 got the opportunity this summer to explore the mechanisms behind thyroid cancer, as part of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP).
