For Mary Langworthy ’17 and Mary Margaret Allen ’17, the geology trip to Turkana, Kenya, was not only a great research experience, but also a true adventure.

Professor of Chemistry Karen Brewer was interviewed by National Public Radio’s Senior Host Robert Siegel on Aug. 23 for an All Things Considered segment, Hamilton College Introduces New Diversity Requirement.” Their conversation centered on the mandate that the requirement be fulfilled within a student’s concentration and how that might be accomplished in subject areas not normally associated with issues of inclusion and difference, identity, culture and social class. Brewer was last year’s chair of the College’s  when the requirement was developed.

A 41-year tradition at Hamilton College continued on August 23 as members of the Class of 2020 lined up at Kirkland Cottage to sign the College Register as a symbol of matriculation at Hamilton. Kirkland Cottage has an even longer history, having been built in 1792.

Marcos Ferreccio ’17 and Alex Cornwell ’17 spent this summer building and optimizing an electron spin resonance (ESR) magnetometer.

“I’m hoping that I can give this document to an organization that will take good care of it and allow other people to study and appreciate it.” These words, spoken by Jean Waite on an episode of PBS’s History Detective in 2012, prompted Hamilton’s Director of Special Collections Christian Goodwillie to place a call that, three years later, led to a donation to the college’s Communal Societies collection.

President David Wippman will preside over the annual Convocation ceremony that officially opens Hamilton’s 205th year on Wednesday, Aug. 24, at 4:30 p.m., in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center.  An all-campus picnic will follow. The Convocation ceremony can be viewed live here.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Biology Simon Coppard was a co-author of a paper titled “Formation of the Isthmus of Panama” published in the journal Science Advances on Aug. 17. The article focused on when the Isthmus of Panama actually formed, joining North and South America.

If you weren’t already planning to make it back to College Hill for Fallcoming & Family Weekend on Oct. 6-9, now you have another reason to do so: Hamilton will inaugurate David Wippman as the College’s 20th president that Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the Margaret Bundy Scott Field House. Walter Mondale, the 42nd vice president of the United States, will offer brief remarks.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Philosophy Douglas Edwards recently presented talks at conferences in South Korea and the United Kingdom. In addition, a draft of his forthcoming monograph is being used in discussion groups at several universities.

With the Syrian refugee crisis ever-present in the news and issues of immigration taking center stage in the current presidential election, questions surrounding religious diversity and inclusivity have rarely been as important in global politics as they are today. It is against this historic backdrop that Shannon Boley ’17 was able to take her past research on religious pluralism from Upstate New York all the way to Rome, Italy, as one of this summer’s 18 Emerson Grant recipients.
