Professor of Cinema and New Media Studies Scott MacDonald participated in a Futures Seminar at the Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at Johns Hopkins University, on Nov. 18 and 19. He was one of three guests invited to the seminar.

Six Hamilton students spent the fall semester on the New York State Independent College Consortium for Study in India (NYSICCSI) program. Katie Barth ’12, Katherine Costa ’12, Beth Foster ’12, Kate Harloe ’12, Elsie Love ’12 and Charlotte Munson ’11 are part of the group, led this semester by faculty director Hamilton Associate Professor of History Lisa Trivedi and assistant director Hamilton alumnus Jack Reigeluth '07. The students traveled throughout northern India, took academic courses and conducted various independent fieldwork research projects.

Hong Gang Jin, the William R. Kenan Professor of East Asian Languages & Literature, chaired a panel titled “Pushed Output Hypothesis and Development of CFL Proficiency and Learning Strategies” at the annual meeting of the Chinese Language Teachers Association (CLTA) on Nov. 19, in Boston. The meeting is part of the annual national convention of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).

Geosciences major Theresa Allinger ’11 recently traveled to Spain to sample corals collected from the Weddell Sea for geochemical analysis.

An article co-authored by Eugene Domack, the Joel W. Johnson Family Professor of Geosciences, has been published in a special issue of Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimtology, Palaeoecology (Palaeo3) .

Director of New Media J.D. Ross was quoted in a New York Times article titled “A Facebook ‘Welcome’ That May Not Be” on Dec. 8. The article, which also appeared on the paper’s “The Choice” blog, described the activities of a firm called Roomsurf.

Approximately once a month, a small but dedicated group of students collaborates on a survey for Hamilton’s student body. HamPoll, Hamilton’s polling organization, has emailed out surveys about topics ranging from dining hall food to Swine Flu to political opinions. The results of these surveys allow students to learn more about the diversity of opinions that surround them, as well as the trends in opinions or habits they engage in.

Associate Professor of French Cheryl Morgan gave a talk in French titled “Nineteenth-Century Noir” at the first “Festival Européen du roman and du cinéma noirs” held in Paris Nov. 13-15.

The Hamilton College Orchestra, conducted by Heather Buchman, will perform its winter concert on Thursday, Dec. 9, at 8 p.m., at Wellin Hall in the Schambach Center for Music and the Performing Arts.

An interview with Associate Professor of German and Russian Languages and Literatures Frank Sciacca and Patrick Raynard, general manager of Bon Appétit, was featured in FoodService Director Magazine. In “Five Questions for: Frank Sciacca and Patrick Raynard,” the pair discussed the development of Food for Thought, a class taught by Sciacca and Professor of Biology David Gapp, and their continued collaboration as the course expands and evolves.
