Manager of Educational Programming and Outreach Megan Austin and School and Family Educator Amber Spadea presented an overview of educational programs offered by the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art at the 2014 New York State United Teachers Regional Education Conference on Nov. 7 in Utica, N.Y.

Douglas Edwards, visiting assistant professor of philosophy, gave an invited talk on Nov. 7 at the University of Connecticut’s Philosophy Department Colloquium. The talk was titled “Truthmaking and the Nature of Truth.”

Hamilton College Performing Arts presents Axiom Brass Quintet, on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m., in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center for Music and the Performing Arts.

Rachel Sobel ’15, a biochemistry and women’s studies double major, has been selected for the second consecutive year to attend the United Nations Climate Change Convention. She is one of eight students sponsored by the American Chemical Society (ACS) to attend the talks, being held this year in Lima, Peru, from Dec. 1-12.

On November 11, 2013, retired Lieutenant General Josiah Bunting III gave a Veteran's Day lecture on leadership during World War II to the Hamilton community. This year's lecture was presented by Lieutenant Colonel Eric Hannis ’90.

Although the United States remained intact after the Civil War, animosity between northerners and southerners has never fully dissipated. Joseph Glatthaar, the Stephenson Distinguished Professor at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, believes this can be largely attributed to the “raiding strategy” employed by the Union during the latter half of the Civil War. Glatthaar travelled to the Hill on Nov. 11 for a lecture and book-signing.

This week marks the National Collegiate Emergency Services Foundation’s National Collegiate EMS week, during which Hamilton recognizes the efforts of its student EMTs. Whenever there is a medical emergency on the Hamilton College campus, student EMTs are always the first-responders.  The Hamilton College Emergency Medical Services (HCEMS) team comprises 24 students from varied backgrounds and interests.  We salute them and thank them for their service.

An article titled “Some Real Analysis behind Optimization of Projectile Motion” by Robert Kantrowitz ’82, professor and chair of mathematics, appears in the November issue of Mediterranean Journal of Mathematics (MedJM).

Paul Clemence, New York-based photographer and author, will present a lecture, “Perception Meets Expression,” on Thursday, Nov. 13, at 4:15 p.m., in the Overlook in the Wellin Museum of Art. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will discuss the perception and expression of architecture through the photographic lens.

The Levitt Center on Nov. 10 hosted Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee, a world-renowned oncologist, scientist, and writer, who gave a lecture on the history of cancer research and its most recent strides.
