Five members of Psi Chi, the national honor society in psychology, volunteered at the Walk for Autism fundraiser in Oneida on April 5. April is Autism Awareness Month and the walk was held to benefit The Kelberman Center in Utica, a regional center for excellence for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder.  The center was founded by Michael Kelberman ’80.

Emma L. Hedley, a senior in the Geosciences Department, presented a poster titled “Beach Nourishment at Virginia Beach, Virginia” at the 49th Annual Meeting of the Geological Society of America - Northeastern Section.  Hedley’s work in coastal geology was presented as a poster in the Coastal/Marine Science session and her abstract was published in GSA Abstracts with Programs Vol. 46, No. 2.

Hamilton will host an International Writers Festival, featuring readings by poet Christian Bök, poet and visual artist Cecilia Vicuña and novelist Larissa Lai on Friday and Saturday, April 11 and 12, at the Taylor Science Center. All the events are free and open to the public.

The National Museum of American History has designated April as Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM). So in the spirit of JAM, Hamilton’s Fillius Jazz Archive is featuring one artist daily on the news site along with that individual’s archived audio interview. Today’s featured artist is Sheila Jordan.

Associate Professor of Africana Studies Nigel Westmaas has published a chapter in a new book titled Black Power in the Caribbean, published by the University Press of Florida (2014).

Peter Kazickas '15 (Amagansett, N.Y./St. Mark's School [Mass.]) of the Hamilton College men’s basketball team was one of 10 members of the 2014 Allstate National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Good Works Team® honored at the NCAA Division I Final Four at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Saturday night.

From disappearing landmasses to widespread drought, descriptions of climate change’s potential impacts are grim. Its larger geopolitical and commercial ramifications are perhaps less talked about. On April 7, Peter Oppenheimer, of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, delivered a lecture about the impacts of climate change in the Arctic.

Lawrence Chua, postdoctoral fellow in Asian studies and visiting assistant professor of art history, gave a recent talk at the Syracuse University Humanities Center on “Architecture, Hip Hop, and Utopia.”

Catherine Brown, senior director of visual communications in Hamilton’s Communications Department, was honored as the 2014 Distinguished Service Award recipient by Hamilton’s Alumni Association. John Hadity ’83, president of the Alumni Association, presented the award on April 4 during the Alumni Council’s Recognition dinner.
