The Clancy D. Connell Book Fund
July 1, 1985

This fund was established in 1985 by numerous donors upon the death of Clancy D. Connell, Class of 1912.
Orphaned at the age of five, Clancy Connell was raised by his grandmother. He graduated from Ogdensburg High School as his class’ Salutatorian. Mentored by his science teacher, Leon Jenks, Class of 1905, Clancy was inspired to attend Hamilton. While on the Hill, he became a member of the Emerson Literary Society, was elected president of the junior class, and managed the football team during his senior year. Following graduation, he began his career as an assistant secretary of the Bowery branch of New York’s Y.M.C.A., before entering the insurance field in 1920 as an agent for Provident Mutual. He rose quickly through the ranks of sales and was named general agent for the company in 1927. He served as president of the Association of Life Underwriters of both New York City and New York State and as president of the National Association.
Clancy Connell was dedicated and passionate about his service to Hamilton. He helped reorganize the Alumni Fund and the Alumni Association and served as the first chairman of the Alumni Council. He received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the College in 1965 and served as a College Trustee until his death. Upon relocation and expansion of the Advancement Office (formerly, Communications and Development) to its current location on College Hill, the building was named the Clancy D. Connell Alumni Center (later becoming the Anderson-Connell Alumni Center).
