The Class of 1890 Book Fund
December 29, 1899

This fund was established as a Class of 1890 memorial to benefit the library through supporting the purchase of books in the department of political science. George H. Minor and Joseph D. Ibbotson were their class’ lead donors.
George Minor and Joseph Ibboston were proud Hamiltonians, each with a passion for education. After graduation, George pursued a wide range of careers, ultimately leading to his service as the Vice President of Erie Railroad. Additionally, in 1937, he served as a Professor at Park College in Missouri. After graduation from Hamilton, Joseph earned an M.A. in 1894, serving as the College’s Librarian until he entered Union Theological Seminary, which he graduated from in 1894. Later in his life, he joined the Hamilton faculty as an assistant professor of English literature and instructor in Hebrew. Aside from his role as an educator, Joseph became an ordained Presbyterian minister, editor of the Documentary History of Hamilton College, and a contributor for Biblical World, New York History. In 1950, he received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Hamilton.
George Minor and Joseph Ibboston shared a love for their alma mater, and their legacies continued with their line of family members entering Hamilton College. Mr. Minor’s son, William S. Minor, Class of 1942, and grandson, Clark Haynes Minor II, Class of 1961, continued the family’s connection to the College, and Mr. Ibbotson had two sons who attended Hamilton: Louis T. Ibbotson, Class of 1922 and J. Selwyn Ibbotson, Class of 1929.
