Day & Time 1: TR 02:30PM 03:45PM

Course Description:

This course examines the work of religious ideas—and ideas about religion—in creating, mediating, and responding to climate change. The course begins by unpacking what we mean by “religion” and its complex relationship to the environment. Students will examine the forces that have shaped religion under the conditions of modernity, including the Reformation, Enlightenment, science, secularism, and narratives about disenchantment. We will engage with primary texts from and literature about religious traditions around the world in order to unsettle universalistic narratives about the environment and climate change. Overall, this course will provide a thorough introduction to both the study of religion and the environmental humanities.
