Islamic art is often understood as being religious in nature, non-representational, and geographically associated with the Middle East. It can be all these things but also might not be. This introductory level writing intensive class will focus on telling the stories of art objects that are both part of the field of ‘Islamic art’ and at the same time don’t adhere to these stereotypes. Case studies will include objects that are explicitly non-religious, representational, and produced and consumed in locations ranging from Europe to Southeast Asia. Students will have the opportunity to hone their skills writing object stories, with extensive peer and instructor workshopping, revising, and critiquing of written work. The course will also include an experiential component: looking at art objects in museum and special collection settings.
