Course Description:

An introduction to philosophical questions through reflection on the nature of fiction. What distinguishes a fictional work from a non-fictional one? What kind of things are fictional characters? What kind of statements do we make when we talk about them? Does it make sense to ask whether such statements are true or false? We will also reflect on the moral status of fictional works: In what sense can a story be called racist or misogynistic? What is the appropriate attitude to take toward such works or their authors?
