The Association of Art Museum Curators (AAMC) awarded Tracy L. Adler, Johnson-Pote Director of Hamilton College’s Wellin Museum of Art, first prize in its annual Award for Excellence for an Outstanding Printed Catalogue/Publication.

Two exhibitions, Yun-Fei Ji: The Intimate Universe and Pure Pulp: Contemporary Artists Working in Paper at Dieu Donné, open at the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art on Saturday, Feb. 6, with a free, public reception from 4 – 6 p.m. Yun-Fei Ji: The Intimate Universe, curated by Wellin Museum Director Tracy Adler, will be open through July 2. Pure Pulp will be open until April 20. Both shows will travel to other venues.

Hamilton College has a long history of engagement in the Foreign Service  beginning with alumnus Elihu Root, class of 1864, who served as U.S. Secretary of State for four years beginning in 1905. Given this legacy, it is not surprising that one current and four former ambassadors are sharing their experiences and perspectives with the campus community this semester.

Recipients of the 2014 Emerson Summer Grants were recently announced. Created in 1997, the  program was designed to provide students with significant opportunities to work collaboratively with faculty members, researching an area of interest. The recipients, covering a range of topics, are exploring fieldwork, laboratory and library research, and the development of teaching materials. The students will make public presentations of their research throughout the academic year.

Lawrence Chua, postdoctoral fellow in Asian Studies and visiting assistant professor of art history, presented a talk at the “Rethinking Art History” symposium, organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) in collaboration with Rice University on April 13 and 14.

Imagine that you need to ask for directions in Madrid, but those three years of high school Spanish didn’t leave a lasting impression. Fear not, because for quick phrases on-the-go, it just takes a Smigin. Smigin is a new mobile translating app that allows users to build phrases and instantly receive accurate translations by selecting sentence fragments from three drop-down boxes.  The app went live in the Apple® app store on Monday, Feb. 17.

A book review by Lawrence Chua, postdoctoral fellow in Asian Studies and visiting assistant professor of art history appeared in Traditional Dwellings and Settlements Review Volume XXV Number 1 (Fall 2013).

Lawrence Chua, postdoctoral fellow in Asian Studies and visiting assistant professor of art history, spoke on the architecture of utopia and globalization with artists Julie Mehretu and Paul Pfeiffer at a salon in New York City on Oct. 28. It was organized by Art 21, the organization that produces the PBS television series, “Art in the 21st Century.”

Composer and pianist Jon Jang will present a series of lectures and a performance during an academic and artistic residency from Monday, Oct. 7, through Friday, Oct. 11. All events are free and open to the public.
