Visiting Assistant Professor of Psychology Kara Sage published an article with co-author Dare Baldwin (University of Oregon) titled "Children's Use of Self-Paced Slideshows: An Extension of the Video Deficit Effect?" in the current issue of the Journal of Research in Childhood Education.

Thirty-nine members of the class of ’18 as well as six transfer students arrived on the Hill on Jan. 16 to register, move in and take part in Hamilton orientation.  The College offers January admission to about 35-45 students per year to fill vacancies created by students on leave and studying abroad.

Celeste Day Moore, visiting assistant professor of history, presented a paper titled “Soundscapes of Liberation: Radio, Jazz, and the U.S. Military in Postwar France, 1944-1946" on Jan. 5 at the annual meeting of the American Historical Association in New York. The panel was called "Aural Histories: Transnational Approaches to Radio in France and Beyond, 1926-1946."

Derek Jones, the Irma M. and Robert D. Morris Professor of Economics, co-authored an article titled “Comparative Efficiency Between Cooperative, Savings and Commercial Banks in Europe Using The Frontier Approach” in the Annals of Public and Cooperative Economics.

The conversion of Minor Theater to a residence hall is proceeding on schedule with an anticipated August 2015 completion date. When remodeling is finished the building will house 52 students on three floors.

Hamilton research projects were featured in letters to the editor in both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal this week. On Jan. 13, a letter by Visiting Associate Professor of Religious Studies S. Brent Plate and Assistant Professor of Art Robert Knight about their research on the transition of sacred spaces was published by the Journal. A letter by Senior Director of Media Relations Vige Barrie about a Levitt Youth Poll was included in the Jan. 13 edition of the Times.

Hamilton College will commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with two events.  The annual MLK Day dinner and lecture on Monday, Jan. 19, will feature Syracuse University Professor Arthur Flowers. The Hamilton Theatre Department will present a play, The Mountaintop, by Katori Hall, on Jan. 20, 21 and 22.

Thomas Wilson, the Elizabeth J. McCormack Professor of History, presented a paper titled “The Imperial Cult of Heaven-God” on a panel at the annual meeting of the American Historical Association on Jan. 4 in New York. 

Professor of Comparative Literature Nancy Sorkin Rabinowitz and Dr. Fiona McHardy (University of Roehampton) jointly facilitated a roundtable discussion at the meetings of the Society for Classical Studies (formerly the APA) in New Orleans, Jan. 8-11.

Spring semester classes don’t begin until Jan. 20 but 39 Hamilton students are back on campus a week early to take part in two Levitt Center programs. Twenty-six students are participating in the fourth Levitt Leadership Institute and 13 are involved in the Social Innovation Fellow Program.
