Students gathered on Dec. 4  for an event publicized on social media as a “Student Walk Out and Die-In,” a reflection of national concern over recent decisions related to police actions against persons of color, specifically the grand jury’s decision not to indict Officer Darren Wilson for the shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown as well as a similar decision related to the death of Eric Garner in New York City.

Derek Jones, the Irma M. and Robert D. Morris Professor of Economics, and Kimberly Walker ’07 published a chapter in International Perspectives on Participation. The book is volume 15 in the series Advances in the Economic Analysis of Participatory & Labor-Managed Firms from Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

The Hamilton College Choir, directed by Professor G. Roberts Kolb, will lead a Candlelight Christmas Vesper Service of Lessons and Carols on Sunday, Dec. 7, at 4 p.m., in the College Chapel. The service is free and open to the public.

Brad Smallwood ’90, head of measurement and insights at Facebook, returned to Hamilton on Dec. 3 to talk to students about his career at the social media giant. The discussion was hosted by the Maurice Horowitz Career and Life Outcomes Center.

An article by Professor and Chair of Mathematics Robert Kantrowitz ‘82 appears in the current issue of the Rocky Mountain Journal of Mathematics. “A fixed point approach to the steady state for stochastic matrices” was co-authored with Michael M. Neumann of Mississippi State University.

Ken A. Dill, Distinguished Professor of Physics & Chemistry at Stony Brook University, will visit campus this Thursday and Friday, Dec. 4-5, as the college's second Robert S. Morris Class of 1976 Visiting Fellow. Dill, a member of the National Academy of Sciences who has been honored with numerous prestigious awards in his field, will present two lectures, "The Deep Innovation Engine of Science in America" at 4 p.m. on Thursday and "A Physical Chemist's Look at How Cells Grow and Evolve" on Friday at 3 p.m. 

Assistant Professor of Psychology Alexandra List co-authored an article that appeared in the November issue of the journal Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics (AP&P). In “Haptic guidance of overt visual attention,” List and her co-authors from Northwestern University “demonstrated a novel crossmodal influence of haptic-shape information on visual attention.”

The Hamilton College athletic department and the Northeast Sports Network (NSN) have reached an agreement to produce video webcasts of Hamilton athletic events for the remainder of the 2014-15 academic year. 

Hamilton’s English and Creative Writing Fall 2014 Reading Series presents events with  poets Sarah Harwell and Gary Leising on Thursday, Dec. 4.  Harwell will discuss MFA programs and getting published at a coffee hour at 4:10 p.m. at the Sadove Sun Porch.  Harwell and Leising will read from their work at 8 p.m. in Dwight Lounge, Bristol Campus Center, and a reception will follow. Both events are free and open to the public.

“Thomas Nast’s Winter Scenes,” an exhibition of prints from the collection of Jay Williams ’54, the Walcott-Bartlett Professor of Religion emeritus, will be on display Dec. 4- Jan. 4 at the Museum of the Southwest in Midland, Texas. A special opening preview party will be tonight (Dec. 3) at 7 p.m. as part of the museum’s “Christmas at the Mansion” celebration.
