Describing the function of art is nearly as difficult as defining it. Both the purpose and objective of art are fluid concepts, changing based on the perspective and context of those viewing it. More than anything, though, art is powerful, holding within itself the capacity for great change. It is effectively an insurgent: a catalyst capable of causing social and cultural advancement from within an institution itself.

Meeting all passerbys on Martin's Way, Alex made his formal debut Friday morning of Fallcoming/Family Weekend. The college's new mascot stepped to the music of a bagpiper and drummer as he made his entrance onto the Sadove Student Center patio.

The Hamilton College field hockey team has drafted 12-year-old Sophia Johnson and her family from Newport, N.Y., into their program through Team Impact, a non-profit that matches children with life-threatening and chronic illnesses with college athletic teams.

Hamilton welcomed Yale Professor and Art School Dean Robert Storr to campus to give the Celebration of the Arts opening address in one of the first events of Fallcoming/Family Weekend on Oct. 9. It was one of many to celebrate the dedication of The Kevin and Karen Kennedy Center for Theater and the Studio Arts (KTSA).

Thomas Wilson, the Elizabeth J. McCormack Professor of History, was elected to a three-year term as president of the Society for the Study of Chinese Religions (SSCR)

Professor of Music Michael ("Doc") Woods and Professor of Music Samuel Pellman presented works at the Everson Museum in Syracuse on Sept. 21 for a concert by the Society for New Music.

Hamilton’s F.I.L.M. series will present Gasland II, directed by Josh Fox, on Sunday, Oct. 12, at 2 p.m., in the Kirner-Johnson Building’s Bradford Auditorium. Fox will be present and will talk about his film following the screening. The event is free and open to the public.

Hamilton's new mascot, Alex, will be introduced to the campus community this Friday, Oct. 10, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. as part of the college’s Fallcoming and Family Weekend. He will emerge from the Sadove Student Center to the music of a bagpiper and drummer.  In an act of self-promotion, Alex will hand out Alexander Hamilton decals, and he also plans to attend other events throughout the weekend as well as throughout the year.

Professor of French Joseph Mwantuali presented a keynote address at a colloquium on the Democratic Republic of the Congo held Sept. 12-14 in Logan, Australia. He spoke at the invitation of Australian Conference Rally on Kongo, Inc. (ACroK), an Australia-based advocacy group.

Hamilton’s combined Fallcoming and Family Weekend, Oct. 9-12, will celebrate the arts with a number of exciting events including the dedication of The Kevin and Karen Kennedy Center for Theatre and the Studio Arts, the opening of the new Alyson Shotz exhibit in the Wellin Museum, and addresses by national leaders in the arts world.
