During 2010 Susan Mason is acting as the subject matter expert and instructor for a series of live, instructor-led virtual lessons in workplace communications for the American Management Association. Using the Adobe Connect platform, Mason uses online real time chat, voiceover Internet protocols, slides, polls and white board applications to deliver her lessons. Mason is director of the College’s Education Studies program.

Craig Calhoun, New York University professor of sociology, will give the Hansmann Lecture at Hamilton on Thursday, Jan. 28, at 4:10 p.m., in the Science Center Kennedy Auditorium. The lecture, titled “Rethinking Secularism,” is part of the spring 2010 Humanities Forum and is free and open to the public.

Co-Chair of the Center for Law and Counter Terrorism and former Federal Prosecutor Andrew McCarthy presented a lecture on a “New Framework for National Security” on Jan. 26 in the Fillius Events Barn. McCarthy gave the first talk of the semester in the Levitt Center Speaker Series.

Associate Professor of History Lisa Trivedi gave a paper titled "Won't You Be My Neighbor?: reflections on Mohandas Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr." at St. Lawrence University on Jan. 22. Trivedi was invited to speak by St. Lawrence for Peace, a campus advocacy group that is part of the college's Global Education Initiative and that organized a week of events celebrating Dr. King's life and work.

Possible negative effects of political encroachment into monetary affairs was the focus of a Reuters article titled “Bernanke tussle deals new blow to Fed autonomy” in which Professor of Economics Ann Owen was quoted. "What you don't want is the FOMC [Federal Open Market Committee] thinking about political repercussions of monetary policy."

More than 130 Hamilton students turned out on Jan. 23 for the 12th annual Student Community Service Day. HAVOC sponsored the event that took volunteers to 10 non-profit organizations in the area for an afternoon of work. Work sites included the Rome Humane Society, Kirkland Town Library, Utica Public Library, Loretto Center, the Children's Museum, Emmaus House, Clare Bridge (Clinton), Rome Humane Society, Spring Farm Cares, Rome Art and Community Center, and Crouse Community Center (Morrisville).

Professor of Chemistry Tim Elgren has published a paper in the Journal of Materials Chemistry with Amy Barrows ’08 and co-workers from Montana State University. The paper is titled “High Level of Hydrogen Production Activity Achieved for Hydrogenase Encapsulated in Sol-Gel Material Doped with Carbon Nanotubes.”

Hamilton College will host both a lecture presented by a cadet from the Air Force Academy and a panel discussion with professors from West Point, CUNY and NYU on the topic of “Outsourcing National Security: The Law and Politics of Military Contracting” on Thursday, Jan. 28, in Dwight Lounge. The event has been organized by Maynard-Knox Professor of Government and Law Frank Anechiarico and is free and open to the public.

A group of four Hamilton faculty members has been awarded a grant of $177,950 through the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) program to fund a shared-use state of the art computing cluster. The project, titled "MRI-R2: Acquisition of a High Performance Computing cluster with a fast interconnect to enable shared-use, college-wide computational investigations at Hamilton College” is led by Assistant Professor of Chemistry Adam Van Wynsberghe as principal investigator with Assistant Professor of Biology Wei-Jen Chang, Assistant Professor of Physics Natalia Connolly, and Assistant Professor of Anthropology Nathan Goodale contributing as co-principal investigators.

Eleven Hamilton students and alumni convened in Manchester, Vt., on a backcountry Gnar Club trip over the winter break, Dec. 31 to Jan. 7. For those unfamiliar with the Hamilton Gnar Club, its club description explains that it is a “Grouping of sessioning and carousing fun makers often to be found in the hills, the forest, the park, or over the steps."
