Ann Silversmith, professor of physics, presented a lecture on March 29 at Ithaca College. “Synthesis and spectroscopy of rare earth based sol-gel glasses” reported results of work done with Kate Arpino ’10 and Andrew Beyler ’10. Silversmith also presented this work earlier in the semester at Davidson College.

Members of the Posse Foundation and Hamilton community gathered on campus March 31 to celebrate a 10-year partnership. The Posse Foundation was represented by chief operating officer Matthew Fasciano, regional vice president Sue Dalelio,  director of Posse Miami Larissa Ramos,  and Lamont Gordon, director of Posse Boston. Hamilton Posse students and alumni as well as college administrators and faculty attended. Former Posse scholar Hector Acevedo '08 gave the keynote address.

Jennifer L. Thompson ’11 and Heather D. Parker ’11 presented posters at the Northeastern/North-Central Geological Society of America Joint Section Meeting held in Pittsburgh on March 22. Both were in the Geologic Education session of the conference.

Associate Professor of Music Heather Buchman made her opera conducting debut when she led the Society for New Music in the world premiere of Eleanor Roosevelt, a new chamber opera by composer Persis Parshall Vehar, on March 26 and 27 in Syracuse.

The Hamilton College Choir will perform the home concert of its recently completed Spring Break Tour on Friday, April 1, at 8 p.m. in Wellin Hall. The performance is free and open to the public.

“An Evening with Spike Lee,” sponsored by the Hamilton College Voices of Color Lecture Series, has been rescheduled to Wednesday, April 13, at 8:30 p.m., in Wellin Hall.

Andrew Dykstra, assistant professor of mathematics, gave a colloquium talk at Northwestern University on March 15. Dykstra's talk described recent work with his Hamilton colleague Michelle LeMasurier and Ethan Coven from Wesleyan University.

Hamilton will host the Christian A. Johnson Excellence in Teaching Conference, an academic conference that will focus on teaching and learning for a meaningful life, on Saturday, April 2.  The conference is supported by the Christian A. Johnson Endeavor Foundation and will take place in the Kennedy Auditorium, Science Center.

A memorial service for Professor of English Emeritus George Bahlke will be held on Saturday, April 2, at 3 p.m. in St. James' Episcopal Church in Clinton, followed by a reception in the parish hall. Bahlke died on Feb. 1 of complications from pneumonia. He was 76 and, although retired, was a frequent presence on campus. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, those wishing may donate to the George Bahlke Travel Fund, established by his wife, family and friends on the occasion of his retirement.

Associate Professor of Art History Stephen J. Goldberg delivered two presentations on Chinese art history at the Institut national d’histoire de l’art in Paris on March 18.
