  • William R. Kenan Professor of East Asian Language & Literature Hong Gang Jin gave the keynote speech at the Fifth Annual Five College Chinese Language Conference at Smith College on Oct. 30. Her talk was titled "Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language: Methodological Principles and Best Practices."

  • Visiting Assistant Professor of Communication Cheryl Casey presented in two roundtable discussions at the 68th Annual New York State Communication Association Conference at Honors Haven Resort in Ellenville, N.Y.

  • Waller Newell, professor of political science and philosophy and co-director of the Centre for Liberal Education and Public Affairs at Carleton University, will give a lecture, “The Code of Man,” on Sunday, Oct. 31, at 7:30 p.m., at Hamilton College in the Science Center’s Kennedy Auditorium. The lecture is free and open to the public.

  • In 2009, Deborah A. Barany '11 and Anthony W. Sali '10 participated in Hamilton's Summer Science Research Program. Under the supervision of Psychology and Neuroscience professor Jonathan Vaughan, they investigated how people control movements in complex environments. A poster about the work was presented at the annual Psychonomic Society meeting in 2009.

  • Hamilton's Family Weekend will take place on campus from Oct. 28-31 with 1,500 family members and friends expected for the annual event. The weekend will give families a good idea of all the Hill has to offer, as activities are planned to entertain and educate.

  • Hamilton College Visiting Assistant Professor of English Jane Springer has been named one of 10 recipients of the 2010 Whiting Writers’ Award by the Mrs. Giles Whiting Foundation. The awards of $50,000 each have been given annually since 1985 to writers of exceptional talent and promise in early career.

  • Christopher Russell, visiting assistant professor of art, opened an exhibition titled “Runaway” on Oct. 23 at the Luis De Jesus Los Angeles Gallery. The exhibit is on view through Nov. 23

  • The Environmental Protection and Safety Department hosted a Mock Dorm Room Fire on the Main Quad as part of National Fire Prevention Week in October. The Clinton Fire Department participated in the exercise, igniting and then extinguishing the blaze.

  • Condoleezza Rice, secretary of state under former president George W. Bush,  will give a lecture on Monday, Nov. 1, at 7:30 p.m., in the Margaret Bundy Scott Field House. No tickets are necessary and the general public will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors for the general public will open at 6:45 p.m. Attendees  are encouraged to park in the village of Clinton and take free shuttles to the lecture.
