In his address at Hamilton College’s commencement, former U.S. ambassador to Germany and longtime top-level executive at Goldman Sachs Philip Murphy advised the Class of 2015 that as they enter the world, above all else “it is the content of your character that counts” and stressed that “the power of the individual to change the world is undiminished.”

Thirty Hamilton seniors were elected to the Epsilon chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious honor society, at the May meeting. Students are elected to membership in recognition of their exceptional academic achievement in fulfilling the goals and purposes of the College.

The winners of the Beverly S. and Eugene M. Tobin Employee Awards were announced and employees celebrating milestone service anniversaries were honored at Hamilton’s 31st annual employee service recognition luncheon on May 18 on Dunham Green.

Rebecca Rees ’16 and Andrew Fletcher ’17 have been awarded Coccia Foundation Scholarships for study abroad in Italy this summer. The Coccia Foundation was established in 1994 by Cavaliere Joseph Coccia, Jr. and his wife Elda as an organization dedicated to the preservation and celebration of Italian culture, especially among younger generations at the college level.

Academic achievement prizes, prize scholarships and other recognition of student accomplishments were awarded at Hamilton’s 65th annual Class & Charter Day convocation on Monday, May 11, in Wellin Hall.

Five Hamilton faculty members were recognized for their research and creative successes with the Dean’s Scholarly Achievement Awards, presented by Dean of Faculty Patrick Reynolds on Class & Charter Day on May 11. The awards recognize individual accomplishment but reflect a richness and depth of scholarship and creative activity across the entire faculty.

Candice McCardle ’15 has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Malaysia. A public policy major she studied abroad in Vietnam, South Africa, and Brazil through the School for International Training’s Honors Program in spring 2014.

Hamilton College’s highest awards for teaching were presented to four faculty members during the annual Class & Charter Day ceremony on May 11. Professor of Classics Shelley Haley was awarded the Samuel & Helen Lang Prize for Excellence in Teaching; Assistant Professor of Mathematics Courtney Gibbons was honored with the John R. Hatch Excellence in Teaching Award; and Max Majireck, assistant professor of chemistry, received the Class of 1963 Excellence in Teaching Award. In addition, Education Studies Program Director Susan Mason received Student Assembly’s Sidney Wertimer Award.

Hamilton College’s Class & Charter Day celebration, an annual convocation recognizing student and faculty excellence during the preceding academic year, will take place on Monday, May 11, at 4:15 p.m., in Wellin Hall.

Three sophomores inspired by Hamilton’s annual Cram & Scram reused furniture and goods sale have taken clothing shopping on campus to a new level with their pop-up Thrift Shop, open today outside Sadove Student Center.  Mary Langworthy, Audrey Love and Sara Purinton are operating a recycled clothing shop with items donated and now purchased by students, faculty and staff. In just three hours the trio has taken in more than $300 which will be turned over to benefit the Nepal relief efforts through an organization that their classmate Nepal native Sharif Shrestha started.
