Several members of the Hamilton College community were touched by the bombings at the Boston Marathon. We have learned that students, alumni and at least one employee ran in Monday’s race. Although shaken emotionally, none of them was gravely injured, according to what has been reported to us, but an alumnus standing near the finish line was injured when one of the bombs exploded. He was released from the hospital last night. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this terrible act of senseless violence and with their families.

The independent study group "The Possibility of a Critical Pedagogy" attended United Opt Out: Occupy the Department of Education 2.0 in Washington, D.C., from April 5-7.

President Joan Hinde Stewart announced the passing of Life Trustee Fran Musselman  ’50, H’05, P’75 in an e-mail to the campus community on April 5. “I write with great sadness to inform you that Life Trustee Fran Musselman’50, H’05, P’75 died peacefully yesterday after succumbing to lung cancer. His daughters were at his side. He lived 87 full years.”

Hamilton students and alumni took the opportunity to put their business ideas and proposals to the test through the annual Hamilton College Pitch Competition held during Volunteer Weekend, April 5-7.

Dave Thompson, director of the Charlean and Wayland Blood Fitness and Dance Center, director of Campus Wellness and professor of physical education at Hamilton, was honored as the 2013 Distinguished Service Award recipient by Hamilton’s Alumni Association. John Hadity ’83, president of the Alumni Association, presented the award on April 5 during the Alumni Council’s Recognition dinner.

Dan Morgenstern, eight-time Grammy Award winner and recently retired head of Rutgers University's Institute of Jazz Studies, will present the Couper Phi Beta Kappa Library Lecture on Monday, April 8, at 4 p.m., in the Kennedy Auditorium of the Taylor Science Center.  Morgenstern will address the changing nature of acquisitions, access and use of jazz archives, tying in to our own Jazz Archive.  His lecture is free and open to the public.

The Career Center will host the next installment of the Investment and Finance Speaker's Series, on careers in financial research on Sunday, April 14, from 7:30-8:30 p.m., in KJ 102.  Students curious about finance, financial markets and research as potential career fields are encouraged to attend.

Mary Bonauto ’83, H’05  was featured in a New York Times article (3/27/13)  “In Fight for Marriage Rights, ‘She’s Our Thurgood Marshall,’” regarding same-sex marriage cases pending before the Supreme Court.

Students in Janelle Schwartz’s Reading the Extreme in World Adventure Narratives class are doing a lot more than reading this semester. Schwartz, a 1997 Hamilton graduate and visiting assistant professor of comparative literature, has teamed up with The Hamilton Outing Club (HOC) to bring experiential learning to her students.

Trial and error, changing careers and taking risks are all steps to realizing one’s true passions. These were just some of the messages alumni in the field of communications shared with students at Hamilton’s first Communications Bootcamp, sponsored by the Career Center and held in the heart of Times Square on March 23.
