On February 22, students in the Semester in Washington Program met with Timothy Nussbaum ’07, Northern Virginia operations coordinator for the George Allen for U.S. Senate campaign. Previously, Nussbaum had served as senior research assistant for the Fred Thompson for President campaign in 2008 and as executive assistant to the president of George Allen Strategies LLC.

Hamilton’s Mock Trial team continued to have a successful season, finishing fourth at the Buffalo, N.Y., regional tournament held Feb. 10 - 12. With an overall record of 7-1, the team earned a bid to compete in the Opening Round Championship Series in Hamilton, Ohio, on March 23 - 25. Maggie McGuire ’15 and Ian Carradine ’15 won Outstanding Witness awards, demonstrating the depth of the team’s talent.

Fifteen Hamilton students took time out on Saturday, Feb. 11, to serve as judges for the Clinton Middle School Science Fair.  The Hamilton volunteers took their jobs seriously, providing many helpful comments on the middle school students’ score sheets.

Associate Professor of Psychology Jen Borton, students Sam Briggs '12 and Beril Esen '13, and former Hamilton Professor Mark Oakes presented two posters at the annual conference of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology in San Diego in January. Their posters were titled Defensive Self-Esteem and Self-Awareness and Unforgettable: Autobiographical Memories of People with Defensive High Self-Esteem.

Lauren Howe ’12 spent the fall semester conducting an independent study project in which she researched and recorded campus food purchasing at Hamilton.  She collaborated with Bon Appétit and Real Food Challenge (RFC), a student-led organization based in Boston advocating “real food” on more college campuses.

An op-ed written by Peter Maher ’13 was published on Jan. 22 by The Tribune Papers of Asheville, N.C. The piece, titled “The Lone Wolf: Why singular terrorists pose the greatest threat,” was written as an assignment in a fall semester Government class, Global Challenges, taught by Ambassador Edward “Ned”  Walker Jr. ’62. Maher then submitted it to the paper for consideration.

Over winter break 15 students from Hamilton’s Model European Union club — as well as faculty advisor Alan Cafruny, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs — attended the 25th annual EuroSim conference in Wroclaw, Poland, from Jan. 5-8.  Each year, the EuroSim conference presents a different topic relating to European policy; the topic of this year’s conference was European asylum policy and the development of a common European asylum system.  

Two Hamilton students have been selected as recipients of the Class of 1979 Student Travel Award. The award, established by the alumni of Hamilton’s Class of 1979, offers financial assistance to outstanding students who wish to pursue extensive research projects in different parts of the world.

Students in the Program in Washington attended a working lunch at the World Bank hosted by Hasan Tuluy P ’08 on Dec. 1. Currently the World Bank Group’s vice president for human resources, Tuluy will become vice president for Latin America and the Caribbean in January.

Ten students from Hamilton's Mathletics team competed nationally on Dec. 3, in the William Lowell Putnam mathematics competition.  The participants were Jeremy Adelman ’13, Abrar Ahmed ’13, Yinghan Ding ’12, Adam Fix ’13, Robert Huben ’15, Maribeth Johnson ’13, Sunrose Shrestha ’14, Josh Snyder ’13, Yonghun Song ’13 and Shichen Xu ’12. They had trained for the competition throughout the fall semester with Assistant Professor of Mathematics Andrew Dykstra.
