In an American Public Media Marketplace broadcast titled “Why the Federal Reserve is vague about interest rates,” Ann Owen, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of Economics, explained the value of being able to predict the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decisions. Her comments were included in the March 19 Marketplace Morning Report in advance of the  conclusion of the Fed's Open Market Committee two-day policy meeting Wednesday afternoon.

Professor of Biology Jinnie Garrett gave two talks as part of the International Women's Day celebration on March 11, organized by the Department of International Business, University of Dhaka in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Students in the Hamilton College Program in Washington, D.C., met with Ambassador Prudence Bushnell, CEO of Sage Associates, for a discussion of U.S. democracy promotion on March 5.  Ambassador Bushnell is the founder and co-director of the Levitt Leadership Institute at Hamilton College.

Students in Visiting Assistant Professor of English Janelle Schwartz's Extreme Adventure Narrative class practiced winter rescue in Root Glen last week. They were reading Joe Simpson's book Touching the Void and had a field day to experience what it's like moving an injured person in the cold.

Professor of English & Creative Writing Doran Larson spoke about his edited collection, Fourth City: Essays from the Prison in America, and The American Prison Writing Archive (a Hamilton, DHi project) in several places from Feb. 25 to 28.

WAMC/Northeast Public Radio will feature a reading by Visiting Associate Professor of Religious Studies S. Brent Plate on Monday, March 17, as part of the station’s Academic Minute. Plate’s piece is titled “An object lesson in religious history” and relates to the topics explored in his new book, A History of Religion in 5 ½ Objects. In a related essay, "A History of Religion in 11 Objects," Plate offered 11 images with his text to illustrate his Huffington Post piece.

Associate Professor of Chemistry Myriam Cotten co-authored a chapter in the book  Advances in Biological Solid-State NMR: Proteins and Membrane-Active Peptides. The publication was just announced by the Royal Society of Chemistry.

The Hamilton College Choir will hit the road for its annual spring break tour, this year visiting cities in the Northeast. The 78 members are directed by G. Roberts Kolb, professor of music and director of choral music at Hamilton since 1981.

Tracy L. Adler, director of the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art, welcomed New York City alumni for a talk with artist Casey Ruble on March 7 at Volta NY. Ruble’s work was included in the museum’s fall exhibition A Sense of Place, which was curated by Adler.
