Every year around late October or early November, Hindus, Jains and Sikhs across the globe gather to celebrate the festival of lights known as Diwali. Diwali signifies the spiritual victory of good versus evil, knowledge versus ignorance, and light versus darkness. Hamilton’s Asian Cultural Society (ACS) hosts Diwali each year and this year celebrated with an interactive DIY Rangoli.

Hamilton College Dean of Faculty Patrick Reynolds announced the promotion of three Hamilton faculty members to the rank of professor. Jennifer Borton, psychology; Sally Cockburn, mathematics; and Julio Videras, economics, were promoted effective Oct. 11.

Carl Rubino, the Winslow Professor of Classics, attended the annual meeting of the Classical Association of the Atlantic States (CAAS) on Oct. 9-11 in Washington, D.C.

Whether tight on cash or short on time, many us understand the concept of scarcity. Although scarcity is often analyzed through the lens of economics, Sendhil Mullainathan, professor of economics at Harvard University, has added the lens of psychology to his work. Co-author of Scarcity: Why Having Too Little Means So Much, he explained the major concepts of his work to an overflowing Chapel audience on Oct. 23.

The Hamilton College Saxophone Ensemble performed at two local events recently. On Sunday, Oct. 19, the group played at the annual B# Music Club fundraiser scholarship concert at the Munson Williams Proctor Art Museum. Utica College welcomed the ensemble to its Lunch Hour Series concert on Oct. 22.

A group of Hamilton students in the Sign Language and Deaf Culture class and students from New York State School for the Deaf (NYSSD) met on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the Wellin Museum of Art to view and discuss various pieces of art. The Hamilton students were fulfilling a class assignment for their course taught by Lecturer in the Education Studies Program Vicky Allen.

The Hamilton College Department of Music will present a solo piano recital by 19-year-old  George Li on Friday, Oct. 24, at 7:30 p.m., in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center. George’s younger brother Andrew will also perform. The event is free and open to the public.

Professional climber and author Majka Burhardt visited Hamilton on Oct. 21. She met with students around campus and at the climbing wall and delivered a lecture on her experiences as a professional outdoor athlete and expedition leader.

Hamilton’s Sidekicks Program celebrated its third year anniversary on Oct. 21 with its Welcome Pizza Party. This year, 55 Hamilton College students were matched with 55 Clinton Elementary School students, ranging from first to sixth grade. With 18 pizzas and 10 bottles of soda on hand, students anticipated an enjoyable evening.
