  • Lawrence Chua, postdoctoral fellow in Asian Studies, recently presented a paper at the annual conference of the Society of Architectural Historians in Buffalo and at the Association of Asian Studies conference in San Diego.

  • Heather Reid, an expert on the philosophical foundations of the Olympic Games, will present a lecture titled “Athletics and Philosophy in Ancient Greece: The Ethics of Excellence,” on Monday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m., in the Kennedy Auditorium, Taylor Science Center. Her lecture is sponsored by the philosophy department and is free and open to the public.

  • While things, or objects, are physically tangible, they can also be an abstract gateway to looking at the world from a fresh perspective and liberating the mind from selfishness. Dr. Ian Bogost, award-winning author of Alien Phenomenology, delivered a lecture to the Hamilton community about the pressing importance of discovering substantive meaning in everyday objects to enrich our daily lives.

  • Hamilton College has been awarded a $250,000 grant from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations to support the three-year pilot phase of a comprehensive First-Year Experience (FYE) program to help students make the transition to college.

  • Assistant Professor of Government Ted Lehmann gave a paper titled “Strategic Minerals and Great Power Rivalry” at the International Studies Association annual conference in San Francisco on April 4.  In the paper, Lehmann examined the relationship between strategic minerals, including rare earth elements and oil, and great power strategic relations.

  • The Hamilton College Theatre Department announces the spring theater production, The Marriage of Bette and Boo by Christopher Durang. Performances will run Thursday, April 18 – Saturday, April 20, at 7:30 p.m., and Thursday, April 25 – Saturday, April 27, at 7:30 p.m. There are two additional performances at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, and Saturday, April 27. All performances take place in Minor Theater on the Hamilton campus.

  • More than half of working-age African American men in the United States have a criminal record. This statistic does not include those who are currently in jail or prison, who have effectively lost their voice and their status as individuals of worth. On April 17, Michelle Alexander, associate professor of law at Ohio State University, presented a lecture on mass incarceration and her bestselling book The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness. The visit was presented by The Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center, the Chief Diversity Officer and the Days-Massolo Center.

  • A lecture by University of Southern California professor William Morgan, titled “Lance Armstrong: Why There Are No Winners in the Doping Wars in Sport,” originally scheduled for Thursday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m., has been cancelled.  Bad weather in the Midwest has forced multiple flight cancellations. The lecture will not be rescheduled this semester.

  • Hamilton senior Anna Zahm, an anthropology/archaeology major, has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) to Thailand.

  • The Hamilton College Arboretum Association will host a presentation titled “Stalking Hamilton’s Trees for a Half Century,” with artist John Suplee ’69, on Saturday, April 20, at 10 a.m., in the Kennedy Auditorium, Taylor Science Center. The event is free and open to the public.
