Associate Professor of Anthropology Chaise LaDousa’s article “On Mother and Other Tongues: Sociolinguistics, Schools, and Language Ideology in North India” has been included in the new edition of Making Sense of Language: Readings in Culture and Communication.

Considering how significant even a single semester’s coursework can be, it’s not surprising that many Hamilton students graduate feeling they need a break from formal education. Not so for Anthony Mathieu ’12, who was accepted into a graduate program at Boston Teacher Residency (BTR). Mathieu will spend a year as a resident in a Boston public school classroom in pursuit of a master’s degree in education.

The Associated Colleges in China (ACC) Startalk teachers program is the only one of its kind to offer instruction solely for non-native-speaking Chinese teachers. The Startalk program was started at Hamilton three years ago by William R. Kenan Professor of East Asian Languages & Literature Hong Gang Jin with the help of a U.S. Department of State Startalk grant.

Hamilton’s student researchers are making great strides in the expansive Ich Genome Project, a multi-institutional effort to develop preventative and combative treatments for Ichthyophthirius multifiliis (Ich), also known as white spot disease in fish. Ravi Jariwala ’13 and Rachel Green ’14 are working under the direction of Associate Professor of Biology Wei-Jen Chang and recent graduate Matthew Therkelsen ’12 to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) genetic markers.

Danielle Brockmann ’13 is no novice when it comes to creating theatrical performances. Although she has not yet graduated from Hamilton, she has already founded her own production company, The House of Brockmann, and has written, produced and performed three plays. Brockmann’s fourth work, A Leurs Yeux, will be a result of the hours upon hours of work she has been able to complete thanks to her receipt of an Emerson Summer Research Grant.

Nearly 100 Hamilton students are on campus for part of the summer as they conduct research with faculty members on a vast array of projects.

After months of hard work, in conditions ranging from the freezing temperatures of January to the hot and humid days of an upstate New York summer, construction crews are finally nearing completion of the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art. The museum, located across from the Molly Root House on College Hill Road, will feature a 6,200-square-foot exhibition space, a creative teaching laboratory and unique open archives.

Naomi Guttman, professor of English and creative writing, has published the personal essay "Trial by Pancake: Confessions in Child-Feeding," in Food and Foodways: Explorations in the History and Culture of Human Nourishment, Volume 20, Issue 2, 2012.

Monica Gutierrez ’15 recently participated in the 57th annual Flaherty Film seminar, held for the fifth year at Colgate University June 16-22. She was sponsored by the Digital Humanities Initiative, and reported on the films and her response to them on the DHI Facebook page.

With a long-standing attraction to the fashion industry, Susan Effler ’12 has been cultivating an interest in retail for years. Effler, a May graduate, just began a new full-time position at Saks 5th Avenue, a luxury fashion retailer based in midtown Manhattan.
