The Daniel J. and Mary A. Keane Book Fund
July 1, 1969

The Honorable John M. Keane (1914-1994), Class of 1936, established this fund with a gift in 1969, to be named for his parents.
Before he was a county surrogate judge, John Keane had a successful and multifaceted career while a student at Hamilton. On the Hill, he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, and devoted himself to campus publications as an editor. He was elected to the journalism honorary society, Pi Delta Epsilon, and was also recognized for his excellence in Latin.
Following graduation from Hamilton, John attended Albany Law School and Cornell University Law School, where he received an LL.B. He then joined a law firm in Binghamton, New York. Within a year, however, he enlisted in the U.S. Army as a cryptanalyst, a position he served in until the end of World War II. Returning to Binghamton following the war, he joined the law firm of Hinman, Howard and Kattell before Gov. Nelson Rockefeller appointed him Broome County surrogate judge.
John remained devoted to his alma mater, and his family’s relationship with Hamilton followed suit with Keane’s two brothers, Daniel Keane, Class of 1938, and Charles Keane, Class of 1940, and a nephew, Daniel Keane, Class of 1971, following him to the Hill.
