The Morgan Platt Underwood Memorial Fund
July 1, 1951

This fund was established in memory of Morgan P. Underwood, by his son, Morgan P. Underwood, Jr., Class of 1950, his daughter, Martha Ann Underwood, and his widow, Nettie M. Underwood. It supports the purchase of books with particular emphasis in the field of Anthropology, with advice from the Head of the Anthropology Department of the College.
The Underwood family has longstanding roots with Hamilton, extending back to the early years of the College. George Underwood graduated from Hamilton in 1838, moving on to become a lawyer and member of the New York State Assembly. He also endowed Hamilton’s Underwood Prize in Chemistry. Jonathan Platt Underwood followed in his father’s footsteps and attended Hamilton as a member of the Class of 1870. Following his time on the Hill, Jonathan Platt Underwood became a prominent figure in the Midwestern lumber industry. The Underwood and Hamilton legacy continued with Jonathan Platt Underwood’s grandson, Morgan Platt Underwood, Jr., who graduated Hamilton in 1950 and became a successful financial planner.
