The Rita and Stanley Hubbard ’45 Book Fund

In 2002, Ellis E. Bradford, Class of 1945, established this book fund in honor of his classmate and friend, Stanley Hubbard, Class of 1945, and his wife Rita. This fund provides support for the purchase of books and other media which will enhance the overall collection at the Burke Library.

Ellis Bradford had deep affection for his long-time friend, Stanley Hubbard (1924-2014), Class of 1945, a writer and editor. While on the Hill, Stanley was a dedicated student and scholarship recipient. His time at Hamilton, however, was interrupted by World War II, when he left campus to serve in the U.S. Army with a field artillery unit in Europe. After the war, he returned to Hamilton and continued his commitment to his studies and college. He served as an editor on campus and on the staff of WHCL radio. Additionally, he was a member of the debate team and the Emerson Literary Society.

Following graduation from Hamilton, Stanley returned to Europe, this time, with the intelligence division of the U.S. Army. He served in Germany and pursued graduate studies at the University of Zurich, ultimately earning a Ph.D. in philosophy. He settled permanently in Switzerland after joining CBA, a chemical based firm, serving as an editor and in the department of public relations. He married Rita Baenziger in 1958. Stanley and Ellis Bradford remained close friends throughout their lifetimes.
