The Vedder Library Fund

This fund was established in 1906 via the estate of Nicholas F. Vedder, a prominent figure in Oneida County history.
Nicholas Vedder was born in 1804, and raised in Oneida County, before moving to Utica and pursuing a career in the boot and shoe business like his brother, John Vedder. Soon after, he entered the dry goods trade through the firm of Guile & Vedder, and later Vedder, Welbon, & Tyler. He was a successful businessman for many decades, ultimately retiring in 1855. Throughout his time as a businessman, he contributed towards the development and growth of Utica and the surrounding county. His contributions towards his city were not only financial, but through his leadership including with the Utica & Black River Railroad Company, Utica Gas Company, and Utica Waterworks Company.
