It's tax season!  While H&R Block tells us it’s refund season and we should be getting our billions back in refund money, there are other people lining up out there to step ahead of us to take our refund checks.

New titles from the Richard W. Couper Press present groundbreaking research on the Shakers, House of David, and Mary's City of David. Materials from these intentional religious communities form an integral part of the Special Collections at Burke Library.

I’ve signed up for the Whole Life Challenge (WLC) as a member of the Hamilton College Challengers team, which includes sixty-two members.  My goal is not to lose weight (although I remember what I weighed as a first-year undergraduate, fifty-three years ago, and imagine if I weighed that amount again I could roll back the aging process :<).  I do want to see whether I feel better if I eat a less carbohydrates, drink more water, exercise and stretch every day.  The challenge lasts eight weeks and that seems doable.  But, I am also interested in seeing how the “gamification” of wellness, teamwork and leadership works in the WLC.

Carolyn Dash, Visiting Professor of Environmental Studies will present an innovative approach for teaching an upper-level seminar that focuses on developing skills such as interpreting data, critical thinking, and finding and reading primary scientific literature through class discussions and a large peer-reviewed grant proposal project. The skills that students develop as part of this course all directly contribute to their senior thesis projects.

For many in higher education MOOCs remain a mystery. It is estimated that 10 million people took one or more MOOCs in 2013. EdX, one of the major organizations providing such courses indicates that there are more than 300 courses offered by its 64 member institutions. In January of 2013, Hamilton and Colgate joined edX to bring the liberal arts perspective to the national discussion on this new form of learning.

If you’ve been in the library this semester, chances are you’ve noticed a few fresh faces at the Info@Burke Desk.  LITS is pleased to announce the launch of our Research Tutor Program, which currently employs six Hamilton students in assisting their peers with basic library research.

One of the largest student employers on campus, LITS employs well over 100 students. They perform tasks such as processing and shelving library materials, staffing service desks, maintaining computer labs and providing audiovisual services. While we rely on our student assistants to ensure smooth LITS operations, we also take part in their education.

Purchasing a new car can be an overwhelming and unpleasant experience. According to a recent survey by Edmunds.com, one in five people said they'd willingly give up sex for a month rather than haggle for a new car. One in three said they'd rather do taxes, go to the DMV, or sit in an airplane's middle seat. This was the challenge I faced when I wanted to replace my ten year old car.
