Julie Suk ’18 utilizes Laser Cutter for Art Thesis

By Ben Salzman

This semester, our new Universal Laser Cutter was put to creative task. Julie Suk (Class of ’18) worked along side Educational Technologist Bret Olsen to produce images that utilized the laser cutter, medium format photography, scanning, Photoshop, and Illustrator. Julie initially explored the intricate cutting of the images by hand and with power tools, but couldn’t achieve the desired results without the use of laser cutting. After a large amount of experimentation and research, Julie and Bret landed on adhering her prints onto Sintra (PVC board similar to foam core board) before loading them into the cutter. This provided a clean precise backing for cutting her prints and the results are spectacular.
