Members of the women’s tennis team volunteered at the Rome Humane Society on Oct. 25 and Nov. 5. Team members dried scoopers, folded towels, brushed and pet cats, and walked dogs.  Women’ s tennis is one of many Hamilton varsity sports that engage in community service activities. The men's cross country team recently volunteered at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore secondhand shop, and the women's soccer team participates each year in the Great American Heart Run and Walk.

Lieutenant Colonel Eric Hannis '90, senior fellow for defense studies at the American Foreign Policy Council in Washington, D.C., will present the second annual Josiah Bunting III Veterans Day lecture on Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 7:30 p.m., in the Fillius Events Barn. The lecture is free and open to the public.

“Mummy Jum: The Shaker-Pilgrim Encounter of 1817-1818,” an article by Director and Curator of Special Collections and Archives Christian Goodwillie was published in Communal Societies. He also co-edited a three-volume set that is part of a series on communal societies.

France Winddance Twine, anthropologist and professor of sociology, will present a lecture “The Sexual Lives of Soldiers: the Circularity of Violence in a Masculine Institution” on Monday, Nov. 10, at 4:10 p.m., in the Red Pit, Kirner-Johnson Building. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will examine the emotional and sexual health of active duty military personnel through a series of memoirs by female veterans. It is sponsored by the Africana Studies Department.

Robert Blecker, professor of law at New York Law School, and Sarah Turberville, senior counsel at The Constitution Project, traveled to the Hill on Nov. 6 for a panel discussion of perspectives on capital punishment in the U.S. The Levitt Center event was moderated by Hamilton’s Frank Anechiarico, the Maynard-Knox Professor of Government and Law.

The Hamilton College Department of Music presents “Fresh Music from the Society for New Music” on Sunday, Nov. 9, at 3 p.m., in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center for Music and the Performing Arts.   The concert will feature compositions by local composers by Dexter Morrill (Colgate University)  and Samuel Pellman (Hamilton College) as well as  Zhou Long, winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for music, and  Chinese composer Guo Wenjing.

The Hamilton Program in NYC students took a train from Grand Central to Stamford, Conn., on Oct. 29 to meet with Robert Morris ’76, P’16,’17 managing partner of the private equity firm, Olympus Partners.

Arthur Levitt Jr., and Lauri Levitt Friedland ’81 visited campus on Friday, Oct. 31 and met with 15 Hamilton students.  The students discussed their work as Levitt Research Fellows, Social Innovation Fellows and Public Service Interns, as well as their experiences with Project SHINE, the Innovation Roundtable, the Levitt Leadership Institute and the Levitt Social Innovation Team.

Students in ECON446, Monetary Policy, advanced to the semifinals of the College Fed Challenge after competing at the New York Federal Reserve on Oct. 31. The class is taught by Henry Platt Bristol Professor of Economics Ann Owen.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology Jaime Kucinskas presented her research on how strategic mediators had to be to bring their Buddhsit-inspired practices into various types of work, at the 2014 Society for the Scientific Study of Religion annual conference in Indianapolis.
