President Joan Hinde Stewart announced the passing of Professor of Biology Emeritus Eugene Putala in an e-mail to the campus community on April 4.

Levitt Center Director and Henry Platt Bristol Professor of Economics Ann Owen was interviewed for a Dow Jones Newswire story titled “Banks Face Borrowing Stigma” that appeared in The Wall Street Journal and on the MarketWatch news site on April 1.

Edward (Ted) Miguel, professor of economics and director of the Center of Evaluation for Global Action at the University of California, Berkeley, will present a lecture on African economic development on Wednesday, April 6, at 8 p.m. in the Fillius Events Barn.

Connor Brown ’12 and Julia Litzky ’12 have been named Barry M. Goldwater Scholars for the 2011-12 academic year. They are among 275 scholars from across the U.S. to receive the Goldwater, the premier national undergraduate award in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering.

Students from the Hamilton Mathletics team won first place in the annual Snow Bowl competition, edging out teams from Colgate University, Skidmore College and Saint Lawrence University. This year's team score of 98 points is Hamilton's highest score on record (records date back to 1993).

Naomi Shihab Nye, award-winning poet, writer, anthologist and educator, will present a poetry reading and lecture on Tuesday, April 5, at 8 p.m., in the Hamilton College Chapel. Nye’s presentation is featured as part of The Diversity and Social Justice Project series on violence, peace, and justice. It is free and open to the public.

“Disaster in Japan: Earthquake, Tsunami, and Nuclear Power Plant Crisis” will be the subject of a series of events in April. The events, which are free and open to the public, are made possible with the support of the Dean of Faculty Office, Diversity Office, Asian Studies Program, Japanese Program and the Levitt Center.

Anne E. Lacsamana, associate professor of women’s studies, published her essay “Empire on Trial: The Subic Rape Case and the Struggle for Philippine Women’s Liberation” in a special issue (Invisible Battlegrounds: Feminist Resistance in the Global Age of War and Imperialism) of Works and Days.

Ann Silversmith, professor of physics, presented a lecture on March 29 at Ithaca College. “Synthesis and spectroscopy of rare earth based sol-gel glasses” reported results of work done with Kate Arpino ’10 and Andrew Beyler ’10. Silversmith also presented this work earlier in the semester at Davidson College.
