The New York Times featured Hamilton’s marathon reading of John Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost in an article in the Education Life section of the Sunday, Jan. 9, edition. Orchestrated last spring by Elizabeth J. McCormack Professor of English Margaret Thickstun, the 12-hour Milton fest drew some 60 students, faculty and community members.

For 11 days, from Dec 20 to Jan 5, the campus was closed and opportunities for energy conservation were plentiful. Physical Plant lowered building temperatures, conserving natural gas and electricity. The estimated savings in electrical energy for all campus buildings totaled 146,100 kilowatt-hours, which represents a 6.1 percent reduction in use for December.

“Ability, Assistance, and Collaboration in Academic Library Assessment,” an article by Assistant Dean of Faculty for Institutional Research Gordon Hewitt and Reference Librarian Rebecca Troendle Hewitt, was published in the November issue of the electronic journal Library Philosophy and Practice (LPP).

Co-ed a cappella group Duelly Noted has embarked on its first winter tour. The tour began on January 6 with a joint concert with the Buffers at Union College and then heads to Northeast Pennsylvania on the 7th to sing for Stroudsburg High School, Nate Taylor's ’11 alma mater, and then to Blair Academy, Mike Breslin's ’13 alma mater. The 17-member group is also planning to sing in New York City before returning to Hamilton on Jan. 10 for the beginning of choir musical rehearsals.

Patrick Reynolds, professor of biology and interim dean of faculty, has been elected president of the American Microscopical Society. Until last spring Reynolds served for 12 years as an editor of the Society’s quarterly journal Invertebrate Biology, the last six as editor-in-chief. In his new post, Reynolds will serve two years as president-elect, then two as president, and one as past president.

An article by Derek Jones, the Irma M. and Robert D. Morris Professor of Economics, and co-authors Panu Kalmi of Aalto University School of Economics in Aalto, Finland, and Antti Kauhanen of the Research Institute of the Finnish Economy in Helsinki, was recently published in the International Journal of Production Economics.

People and events at Hamilton drew much interest from local media during 2010. Students and faculty were the subjects of several feature articles in local newspapers, and a number of public events on campus brought positive media attention to the College. Professor of History Shoshana Keller wrote the introductory essay to the most recent "Journal of Women's History" book forum, a discussion of Kumari Jayawardena's The Erasure of the Euro-Asian.

Ken Bart, Brian Collett and Phil Pearle (together with three coauthors from the University of Montana) published a paper in the American Journal of Physics in December (Vol. 78, pp. 1278-1289) titled "What Brown saw and you can too." In addition, they have launched a more detailed website. Bart is director of the Microscopy and Imaging Facility and Collett and Pearle are professors of physics.

Assistant Professor of Philosophy Russell Marcus presented his paper "The Explanatory Indispensability Argument" at the Eastern Division Meeting of the American Philosophical Association in Boston on Dec. 30.
