  • Chad Williams, assistant professor of history, participated in a Scholars Roundtable titled "The Relevance and Importance of African Americans in World War I," at the National World War I Museum in Kansas City on Memorial Day, May 25. A ceremony honored African-American veterans of all wars and featured the unveiling of a painting inspired by African-American veterans.

  • Four Hamilton faculty members have received awards to conduct research work during the summer. Associate Professor of Sociology Steve Ellingson and Associate Professor of Economics Julio Videras and were each awarded a Class of 1963 Faculty Fellowship. Assistant Professor of Biology Wei-Jen Chang and Assistant Professor of Japanese Kyoko Omori each received a Class of 1966 Career Development Award.

  • Sixteen Hamilton rising juniors and seniors will spend their summer conducting research as recipients of 2009 Levitt Fellowships. Each year the Levitt Center funds student-faculty research to enhance study around issues of public affairs. This summer's projects represent a wide array of topics as well as geographical locations, from Identity and Community on Martha's Vineyard to North Korean Human Rights.

  • Professor of Art Bill Salzillo has been elected to the Society of American Graphic Artists. Over the years the membership has included most of America's foremost printmakers. Membership in the society enables artists to show their work in New York City through important exhibitions with substantial awards.

  • Cathie Black, president of Hearst Magazines, told Hamilton's Class of 2009 to be agents of change at its commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 24. She also discussed changes underway in the media industry and the value of having first-rate communication skills.

  • Hamilton College football player Trevor Pedrick '09 (Wallkill, N.Y./Wallkill Senior HS) and women's soccer player Erica Dressler '09 (Farmington, Conn./Miss Porter's School) were recipients of the inaugural Milton H. Jannone Award at the College's senior athlete awards dinner on May 21.

  • The Hamilton College chapter of Sigma Xi, the scientific research society, elected 32 students and three alumni to associate membership and four faculty to full membership on May 11.

  • After last year's successful launch of Ham's Cram & Scram, the recycling effort is back and it appears that it will surpass last year's collection. The purpose of Cram & Scram is to collect recyclable/reusable items from residence halls – everything from furniture and appliances to clothing, books and unopened food items. Rather than throwing the items away and sending them to the county landfill, they are collected and sorted for reuse.
