Studying abroad in the summer provides some students with the opportunity to have an international experience outside of the regular academic year or allows them to extend a semester or year abroad experience.

Summer International Research Abroad

Global Learning has curated a list of international summer research opportunities that have worked well for Hamilton students in the past.

Summer Study Abroad Application Process

Step 1: Follow the instructions on the Getting Started page.

Step 2: If you are eligible, consider applying for a Gilman scholarship. Contact the Student Fellowships Coordinator if you are interested in applying. Program providers may also provide summer scholarships.  Keep in mind that often these awards are small and do not cover the full cost of the program.

Step 3: Apply for your summer program directly through the program provider. We strongly recommend using a reputable provider and therefore recommend getting advice from your study abroad advisor.

Step 4: Inform the Global Learning Office of your program selection so that we can give you institutional approval.

Step 5: Complete the Petition for Transferred Credit form by May 1 and submit it to the Registrar’s Office. The Petition for Transferred Credit requires your academic advisor’s approval and may also require department chair approval if you are seeking credit for a major or minor requirement. When submitting the petition for approval, make sure you have attached course syllabi and/or course descriptions.

Guidelines for Summer Study Abroad

  • Students may only transfer a maximum of two Hamilton credits from a summer study abroad program.
  • The final transcript should be sent to the Registrar’s Office.
  • Students must earn a letter grade of C or higher to be able to transfer course credits. Additionally, students may not take the course Pass/Fail or Credit/No Credit.
  • Hamilton does not provide financial aid for summer study abroad.
