In general, students studying abroad for a semester or an academic year will receive international health insurance coverage through their study abroad program provider. However, Global Learning will automatically enroll students in GeoBlue Health Insurance coverage for certain programs. If you will be receiving this coverage, the Global Learning office will let you know and work with you to answer any questions you have.

The GeoBlue policy includes health insurance coverage as well as emergency assistance coverage including evacuation and repatriation benefits.

How to Register & Access Your Account

You will be enrolled in GeoBlue international health insurance by the Global Learning office prior to departure. Once you are enrolled, you will receive an email to the address you have provided on your study abroad application. This email will come from customerservice@geo-blue.com and may go directly to your spam folder. The email will provide you with your certificate number and instructions on how to register your GeoBlue online account. After you register, you will be able to:

  • Print your ID card
  • Allow a parent/guardian to access your account
  • View your member guide
  • Review your plan benefits
  • Locate carefully selected, trusted providers and hospitals (including English speaking when relevant)

You can also register through the GeoBlue App on your phone or tablet.

Note: You cannot access your GeoBlue account until you have been enrolled by Global Learning. If you have questions prior to that, please contact Global Learning. Once you are enrolled and have registered your account, it is important to familiarize yourself with all the services and resources they provide before you go.

Accessing Medical Care Overseas

For pre-trip planning, or if you are outside the USA and you need to locate a doctor abroad, visit the GeoBlue Member Hub or use the GeoBlue app to find providers and request Direct Pay. If you prefer, you can also contact GeoBlue directly by phone or email for assistance.

Direct Pay is a service that issues a Guarantee of Payment (GOP) from GeoBlue to participating providers outside the U.S to cover medical treatment. In many countries providers require this at the time of the visit. If this guarantee is not arranged prior to the visit, the physician may require additional payment up front from you beyond any deductible, copayment or co-insurance that may apply at the time of service.

For optimal service, request Direct Pay at least 48 hours prior to your appointment to avoid paying out-of-pocket for medical care and submitting claims.

Other Important Information

GeoBlue health insurance coverage is not valid in the U.S. Hamilton College requires that students going abroad retain their U.S. health insurance coverage and/or health insurance coverage in their home country.  All students who seek to retain U.S. health insurance should enroll in U.S. insurance that is compliant with Hamilton College requirements.
