With extensive media coverage of gruesome acts committed by ISIS, Al-Qaeda, Hezbollah, Jihadists, the Taliban and the Boko Haram, to name a few, many Americans wonder why Islam lends itself so readily to violent extremism. The same question has been recently raised on-campus by the Enquiry, a weekly opinion editorial sponsored by the Alexander Hamilton Institute, prompting the Muslim Students Association (MSA) and the Arabic and Middle East Club (AMEC) to invite a panel of experts to campus in an effort to deepen the community’s understanding of the connection, or lack thereof, between Islam and extremism.

Members of the Hamilton community are turning out to join the Be the Match marrow registry on Feb. 11 in Beinecke. Every four minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer and  marrow transplant is their only hope. By 11:30 a.m. more than 50 students had registered as potential donors by providing a cheek swab to identify tissue type and filling out a short questionnaire.  Anyone aged 18 to 44 in good health is encouraged to register. The Be the Match registry will be open today until 2 p.m.

Hamilton College will host a panel titled “Islam: A Religion of Extremism?” with a panel of experts, including former U.S. ambassadors and faculty with expertise in the Middle East, on Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 4:15 p.m., in the Chapel. The discussion is free and open to the public.

Students in Hamilton's NYC program went to the United Nations on  Jan. 28 for a general tour. International relations concentrator Dimitru Kaigorodov ’16 contacted his former Hamilton professor Calin Trenkov-Wermuth ’00 who now works at the UN's Department of Peacekeeping Operations. Trenkov-Wermuth met the group and answered questions about his work there.

“Using Noninvasive Brain Measurement to Explore the Psychological Effects of Computer Malfunctions on Users during Human-Computer Interactions,” co-authored by Leanne Hirshfield ’02, Stephen Harper Kirner Professor of Computer Science Stuart Hirshfield, Mathew Farrington ’12, Spencer Gulbronson ’12 and Diane Paverman ’13, was published in Advances in Human-Computer Interaction.

Some 55 nattily attired Hamilton College seniors took part in a dress rehearsal for life Sunday afternoon; they engaged in the Career and Life Outcomes Center’s Interview Mojo, which unfolded in the Fillius Events Barn and Tolles Pavilion. A platoon of staff, faculty, alumni, community members – and one parent – played the role of prospective employers and conducted mock interviews with the students, who were advised to come dressed for success. Some had been on interviews or practice interviews, some had not.

A little real world experience before graduation gives students a definite advantage and Hamilton’s Program in Washington D.C. allows students to do just that. In addition to taking classes and writing a thesis, each of the eight students on the program heads to the office each morning, fulfilling the internship portion of the experience.

Kate Emlen K’72 is showing her recent painting in an exhibit Figures and Landscapes at the Thos Moser Showroom in Freeport, Maine. The opening reception is on Thursday evening, January 22nd, from 6 to 8. Thos Moser is a furniture maker whose showroom in Freeport is a long-time venue for some of Maine's premier artists. The focus of Emlen’s work is the unique beauty of Maine’s and Brittany’s landscapes. She shows at Prince Street Gallery in New York, George Marshall Store Gallery in York, Maine, and Caldbeck Gallery in Rockland, Maine, among others.
