Doug Lemov '90, managing director of True North Public Schools, will discuss how to put more students on the path to college in a lecture on Monday, Oct. 4, at 4:10 p.m., in the Red Pit, Kirner-Johnson Building. His presentation “Building Effective Schools: Lessons from High-Performing Schools," is free and open to the public. It is based on his book, Teach Like a Champion: Techniques that Put Students on the Path to College.

R. Butler & Co., was interviewed for the Home and Garden section of the New York Times. 

Julianne Jaquith '08 has been awarded a Fulbright Teaching Assistantship to Venezuela. She will spend the 2010-2011 academic year in Mérida, Venezuela, helping to improve students’ English language skills while learning more about her host country.

Raye Leith K '78 recently opened her new exhibit, Titled Topography of Memory: New Works by Raye Leith at the McLean Project for the Arts. The show opened on September 16 and will run until October 30.

M. Bernardine Dias '98 is hoping to revolutionize the use of technology by bringing it to underserved areas around the world. Dias' work is inspired by her own childhood in Sri Lanka and the work she has done since as a Robotics professor at Carnegie Mellon University.

 Matthew Kahn ’88 spoke to the Hamilton community about his latest book, Climatopolis on Sept. 21. His book offers an unusual approach to dealing with climate change: because little is currently being done to stop climate change, the world should switch its focus on adapting to the changes that have already been created and show no sign of slowing down.

Hamilton alumnus Matthew Kahn ’88 will address the economics of and future adaptation to climate change in a lecture on Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 7:30 p.m., in the Chapel. The lecture, “Climatopolis: How Our Cities will Thrive in the Hotter Future,” is sponsored by Hamilton’s Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center. It is free and open to the public.

Dr. James Cobey ’65 presented a lecture on ‘‘The International Campaign to End Landmines’’ on Sept. 16 in the Fillius Events Barn as part of the Levitt Center Security, Sustainability, Equality Inequality Series. Cobey, who shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997, lectured about the efforts he and others have made in pushing for the eradication of landmines across the world.

Alumnus James C. Cobey '65, an orthopedic surgeon at Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C., will discuss “The International Campaign to Ban Landmines,” on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 7:30 p.m., in the Fillius Events Barn. He is the first speaker in a series of evening lectures for the 2010-11 academic year focused on three thematically based programs: Security, Sustainability, and Inequality and Equity. The lecture is free and open to the public.
