Visiting Associate Professor of Religious Studies S. Brent Plate presented a paper at the 7th International Conference on Media, Religion, and Culture hosted by Ryerson University in Toronto.

Most children are crazy about animals; aquariums, petting zoos and pony rides are the world’s best entertainment for many children. Elizabeth Bucceri ’11 gets to spend her summer not only making youngsters happy at one of their favorite places, but releasing her own inner child as she interns at the Philadelphia Zoo. Her internship is supported by the Jeffrey Fund for Science Internships, managed by the Career Center.

Four Hamilton students were selected as Diversity and Social Justice Project (DSJP) Service Associates for 2010. The program is designed to support students who wish to make connections between their own disciplinary or interdisciplinary work and the mission of the DSJP. In his neighborhood of Flushing, Queens, Xiang Wang ’12 watches as the lifeblood of the Chinese immigrant community is drained away. Some of these immigrants, out of a desire to “get rich quick,” have turned to gambling. Wang is working under an Emerson grant to further explore the causes and effects of this detrimental trend.

Cynical, suspicious and propaganda-filled, France was not a pleasant place to be in the years between World War I and World War II. Despite having fought on the same side of the war, France and the United States reacted very differently to it, as is shown in their film and print media. Kelsey Brow ’12 received an Emerson Grant to dig deeper into these differences.

Evan Taddeo ’11 is one of those people who isn’t too bothered by a parasite. Playing with them from their juvenile stage, he cares for the eggs, perpetuating a new generation of infective baby worms. Taddeo is beginning his thesis in the biology department over the summer, analyzing the life cycle of the mouse parasite Heligmosomoides bakeri (H. bakeri).

Eugene Domack, the Joel W. Johnson Family Professor of Geosciences, presented “A Continuous GPS Network for Measuring Crustal Response to Changes in Ice Mass, a Sub-project of LARISSA (Larsen Ice Shelf System, Antarctica) and Polenet” at the XXXI SCAR and Open Science Conference held July 30 through Aug. 11 in Buenos Aires.
