  • In the current job market, summer internships are becoming harder and harder to come by, but this did not stop Bonnie Wertheim ’14 from securing two internships this summer in the competitive field of entertainment media. Wertheim is spending the summer splitting her time between VICE Media, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and Universal Republic Records, in New York City.

  • As Hamilton celebrated the 200th anniversary of the signing of its charter this past week, Don Spencer ’59 was celebrating his birthday as well. While turning 200 might initially seem like a grander feat than turning 76, Don Spencer’s 76th birthday was far from unremarkable. That’s because Spencer turned 76 while riding a bicycle in the midst of a nearly 500-mile journey from Pittsburgh, Pa., to Hamilton’s Bicentennial Alumni Reunion in Clinton, N.Y.

  • Hamilton’s annual reunions take on special significance this year as the college celebrates its bicentennial with an All-Alumni Reunion, May 31-June 3. More than 2000 alumni and their guests are expected.  A special welcome is extended to members of the class of 1962 who are celebrating their 50th reunion. A full schedule of events will keep attendees busy all weekend.

  • On Wednesday, May 30, Robert Meelan, supervisor of the Town of Kirkland,  will present President Joan Hinde Stewart with a proclamation from the town in honor of the college’s 200th anniversary of the May 1812 signing of the charter by Regents of the University of the State of New York. The presentation will be made at the town meeting.

  • In observance of the 200th anniversary of Hamilton’s founding, the Hamilton College Arboretum Association hosted the A.P. Saunders Tree Peony Fest on Saturday, May 26. A birthday cake to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the signing of the college’s charter was served.

  • Visiting Associate Professor of Religious Studies S. Brent Plate recently published two book chapters at the intersections of religion, film and contemporary culture. The first, titled “Religion and Film: Making Movies, Making Worlds,” appears in Religion and Culture: Contemporary Practices and Perspectives, edited by Vincent Biondo and Richard Hecht, and published by Fortress Press. The volume is an anthology of essays that look at the religious practices, including topics of violence, gender, nature, the arts, sports and more. Plate’s contribution argues for the ways cinema construes particular frames of reality in ways akin to religious traditions.

  • U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand introduced a resolution in the U.S. Senate on Thursday, May 24, to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of Hamilton College. The senators proposed a measure to celebrate the college’s “sustained commitment to its charter two centuries ago.” They recognized the alumni, faculty and students of Hamilton for “helping the United States to grow as a diplomatic and industrial world power,” according to the senators’ statement. The college received its charter from the Regents of the University of the State of New York on May 26, 1812.

  • The Diversity and Social Justice Project (DSJP) is a multifaceted initiative intended to “offer students, staff, and members of the broader Hamilton community the intellectual and moral tools for becoming global citizens and compassionate human beings.” This summer, the DSJP is sponsoring five students for national and international research projects aimed broadening understanding of diversity and social justice topics.
