Style has devoted a special issue (Volume 48/1) to recent pedagogical work by Peter J. Rabinowitz and Corinne Bancroft ’10. Rabinowitz is  the Carolyn C. and David M. Ellis ’38 Distinguished Teaching Professor of Comparative Literature. The issue begins with Rabinowitz and Bancroft’s “Euclid at the Core: Recentering Literary Education.”

On the heels of Hamilton’s hosting of the second annual International Wellbeing and Public Policy Conference earlier this June, it seems appropriate that a USA Today article, in which a Hamilton professor is quoted, should focus on the topic as it relates to college campuses generally. In the article titled “Colleges tout well-being, not just job prospects” published on June 22, Dan Chambliss, co-author of How College Works, was quoted on the topic.

Philip Klinkner, the James S. Sherman Professor of Government, was quoted, first by Utica’s Observer-Dispatch (OD) and then by the National Review Online (NRO), referencing his OD quotes. The OD article titled “Nearly $1M spent on Hanna's behalf vs. Tenney” appearing on June 13 and the NRO article titled “Is Claudia Tenney the Next David Brat?” and appearing on June 20 compared U.S. Representative Richard Hanna’s campaign for re-election to the New York’s 22nd district against Claudia Tenney to that of Eric Cantor’s campaign.

Dave Thompson, director of the Charlean and Wayland Blood Fitness and Dance Center, Campus Wellness director and professor of physical education, was a panel member during the American Heart Association’s second annual Fit-Friendly Worksite Wellness Symposium.

In an American Public Media Marketplace broadcast on June 17 titled “Why the Fed sees inflation differently than you,” Ann Owen, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of Economics, discussed possible Federal Reserve’s interest rate decisions and how they might relate to inflation rates. This was the seventh time that Owen has been interviewed by Marketplace in the last year.

Derek Jones, the Irma M. and Robert D. Morris Professor of Economics, co-presented a paper at the 17th World Congress of the International Economics Association (IEP). The conference was held June 6-10 in Jordan, along the shore of the Dead Sea.

Ernest Williams, the William R. Kenan Professor of Biology, discussed the decline in the monarch butterfly population on a recent Morning Edition broadcast. The segment, titled “Upstate NY sightings of monarch butterfly in danger,” aired locally on NPR affiliate WRVO on June 14.

Dozens of economists, psychologists and other wellbeing and happiness scholars hit the Hill this week as Hamilton College hosted the second annual International Wellbeing and Public Policy Conference, sponsored by the International Journal of Wellbeing. The conference, from June 10-12, drew many of the world’s leading experts on happiness and wellbeing studies, including Hamilton alumnus  Arthur Stone ’74, Ph.D., who delivered one of the keynote speeches.

Hamilton played host to a group of senior high school students from the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill (VVS) Central School District on May 19. Students from the AP English and AP Biology classes spent the day working on information literacy skills to better prepare them for college.

Visiting Associate Professor of Religious Studies Brent Plate was invited to be a FIRST (Faculty-in-Residence Summer Term) scholar at the University of Colorado (CU) at Boulder this year.
